An ideal app for young readers, Cimo Spelling helps teach sight words with the help of an adorable penguin pal, Cimo. The app teaches a variety of high frequency and sight words from the Dolch Sight Words list.
Cimo Spelling features the word spoken aloud, and pieces of an iceberg each have a letter of that word. Tap the loudspeaker icon to hear the word aloud again if needed. Drag the iceberg pieces into a row to allow Cimo to cross to the large iceberg and catch fish. Once you spell the word correctly, Cimo crosses the bridge. If you spell the word incorrectly, Cimo takes a dip in the water.
The report screen of Cimo Spelling also shows you which words you spelled and how many times you spelled the correct answer. The app also features a setup screen, where you can choose the challenge or practice levels, and you can select if you want the player to receive a second try if he misspells a word on the first try.
Cimo Spelling also has a sound out variation, which uses phonics to help children learn new words.
Cimo Spelling is a simple app, but the cute penguin is a big draw for young children, and it makes early literacy skills fun to learn. The app is available for iPhone and iPad for $2.99.
